Celebrating | Job: Women's Discipleship Group

At the beginning of Fall 2019, Sound City launched our first official women’s discipleship group in Lake Forest Park. Meeting on Tuesdays from 10am to 12pm, the women are exploring the book of Job along with the study, “Job: A Story of Unlikely Joy” by Lisa Harper. The group will continue meeting through November 5th.

Our mission at Sound City is to glorify God by proclaiming Jesus, receiving grace, being disciples, and making disciples. We believe that what you think about God affects every aspect of your life. In his grace, God has given us his written Word as a firm foundation (Titus 1:9) so that we may know him truly, and also that we may live godly lives (2 Pet. 1:3).

We are so thankful for this discipleship group, for the opportunity for these women to learn, enjoy God, build relationships, and to be equipped for a life of ministry. Let’s hear more about the group and how it came to be, from leader Suzy Odgers.

Suzy, what sparked your interest in leading the Job study?

For me, it started with my own need to attend a women’s Bible study and for connection and community with other women in the church. I was interested in leading this study of Job because I had previously participated in this study and it provided me with a unique perspective of suffering that deepened my faith. It was something that I wanted to share with others.

Have you ever taught the book of Job before?

I haven’t and because of the unique format of the study, I’m really just a host. It is a video study that we watch together and then follow up with questions and sharing time. There is a workbook study guide that we use during the week to dig deeper, but it can also be used as a personal journal of sorts. I don’t want it to be considered homework, but more of a way to encourage daily time with Jesus. The women can share any insights they found meaningful during the week or just use if for their own edification.

Is there a topic within the study that you are passionate about?

The subtitle alone–”A Story of Unlikely Joy”–turned my head and shed a whole new light on Job that I hadn’t seen before. I wanted to share that with other women because it was so impactful to me.

What’s your heart for the women in the discipleship group?

My desire is that the women’s faith would be deepened, to create new and meaningful relationships with one another, and that we would all know that when we do experience suffering (and we all will in some form or another) that God can use it for his glory.

What has been exciting to see in the group so far?

The most impressive thing that has stood out to me so far is the willingness of the group to be vulnerable, honest, and comfortable to share.

Praise God for his goodness. We are so thankful for Suzy stepping up to lead this discipleship group and to provide a place for these women’s faith to be strengthened and their joy deepened. Let’s pray now that God would continue to raise up servants to answer the call to equip his people, to share his truth and love.
