All of the money and resources that we own ultimately belong to God (Psalm 50:10-12). This means that when Proverbs 3:9 instructs us to "honor the Lord with [our] wealth and with the firstfruits of all [our] produce," we are simply giving God back a portion of what he has generously blessed us with. Financial giving is one of the foundational actions of the Christian life! When we give of our money, we...

  • ...take care of the needs of the poor (Proverbs 19:7, Matthew 25:37-40, Galatians 2:10)

  • ...support the work of the ministry in the church (1 Corinthians 9:14, 1 Timothy 5:17-18)

  • ...participate in the spread of the gospel throughout the world (Acts 13:2-3, Luke 9:1-6)

But it goes one step further. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught that our hearts and our wallets are inextricably linked: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also: (Matthew 6:21). This means that giving isn't something we do simply for practical reasons, but we give generously because it shapes our hearts to become more like God, the one who is exceedingly generous!

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
— 2 Corinthians 8:9

Giving should never be done out of guilt or naked obligation, nor should it be done to "force God's hand" into responding with material blessings. Rather, giving should be done as as an act of joyful worship to God, a way to respond to his overflowing generosity to us. We invite you to give generously to the work that God is doing in and through Sound City Bible Church!

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
— 2 Corinthians 9:7
